Academics

The academic domain refers to teaching and strengthening skills related to learning, school readiness, and classroom participation. It focuses on building foundational skills that help children succeed in structured educational settings, as well as higher-level academic abilities. Instruction is individualized and data-driven, with goals broken down into manageable steps and reinforced systematically.

Behaviour Modification

The behaviour modification domain in ABA focuses on identifying, reducing, or replacing challenging behaviours while increasing positive, socially significant behaviours. The goal is not simply to “stop” a behaviour but to understand its function (why it occurs), teach appropriate replacement skills, and create supportive environments.

Communication

This domain in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) focuses on developing skills that allow individuals to effectively express their needs, wants, thoughts, and feelings, while also understanding and responding to the communication of others. ABA interventions target both expressive (what the learner says, signs, or otherwise communicates) and receptive (what the learner understands) language.

Fine Motor

The fine motor domain focuses on strengthening small muscle movements in the hands, fingers, and wrists that are essential for independence in daily living, academic tasks, and play. ABA programs can help learners build coordination, precision, and functional use of their hands. These skills often serve as the foundation for handwriting, self-care routines, and participation in age-appropriate activities.

Gross Motor

The gross motor domain targets large muscle movements and whole-body coordination that are essential for mobility, play, and independence. Gross motor goals support the development of strength, balance, coordination, and endurance. These skills are foundational for participating in physical activities, navigating daily environments safely, and engaging in peer play or group sports.

Social Skills

The social skills domain focuses on helping individuals build meaningful, appropriate, and reciprocal interactions with peers and adults. ABA targets both foundational skills (such as joint attention and turn-taking) and more advanced social behaviours (such as understanding emotions, problem-solving, and engaging in group activities).

Play Skills

The play skills domain targets the development of functional, imaginative, and social play that supports learning, creativity, and relationship building. Play is a critical way children explore their environment, practice new skills, and engage with peers.

Independence

This domain focuses on teaching daily living skills that help individuals care for themselves and function more independently across home, school, and community settings. These skills are essential for increasing confidence, reducing reliance on caregivers, and improving overall quality of life.

Strategies used in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

Positive Reinforcement

Encouraging desired behaviours by providing something motivating after the desired behaviour occurs.

Prompt Fading

Providing the individual with the support to learn a new skill, then gradually reducing assistance until the skill can be performed independently.

Task Analysis

Breaking complex skills into smaller, more manageable steps and teaching those steps one at a time.

Shaping

Providing reinforcement for approximations of a behaviour and systematically increasing the steps until the full skill is acquired.

Functional Communication Training

Teaching appropriate ways for an individual to communicate their wants and needs, replacing the challenging behaviour.

ABC's

A documentation style used to understand why a behaviour happens by looking at what occurs right before the behaviour, what the behaviour looks like and what happens right after a behaviour.

APPROACH

The behaviour analytic approach used in ABA looks at how a child’s environment affects their behaviour and learning. Skills are taught by breaking them into small, manageable steps and using strategies like positive reinforcement to encourage progress. Strategies are individualized and adjusted based on what works best for each child.
